MHCLG Statutory Calculation Guide

How to Calculate Council Tax in the UK

Council Tax bills are calculated by multiplying your local billing authority's Band D baseline charge by the statutory band ratio set in the Local Government Finance Act 1992.

1. Statutory Formula
(Band D Base × Band Ratio) - Discounts

All bands are fixed fractions of Band D, ranging from 6/9 (Band A) to 18/9 (Band H).

2. 2026/27 England Average
£2,171 per year (Band D)

Represents £217.10/mo across standard 10 instalments, or £180.92/mo across 12 months.

3. Single Person Discount
25% Statutory Reduction

If only one qualifying adult resides in the property, the annual bill is reduced by exactly 25%.
